Artwork No. 1

This artwork is a playful union of line, shape, and form. If you look closely, you'll notice I've used my own face as inspiration. While making this artwork, I found the fractal nature to be challenging. The entire artwork is primarily made of lines and shapes. Hatching was used to carve out dimension and introduce form and value. The solid black and purple colored shapes were added to create movement for the eye when viewing this piece.

Organic shapes and free flowing lines invoke the feeling of nature in this artwork. Color is also a major theme in the overall design. I used a limited palette (primary colors, white and black) when painting this piece. Strategically, white was added to colors to make tints used for the background and black was added to make shades used In the foreground. By doing so, the shapes in the background fade away while the foreground is emphasized and grabs your eye first. Also the black lines offer a contrast against the other colors used. To create a pleasing composition, I was conscious of the plant's placement by having It start In the upper left corner and cascade to the lower right corner. The sun and blue shape's bold presence on the right balance the weight the plant.

While contemplating a design for this print, I was Inspired by a lighthouse my husband and I visited while staying on Martha's Vineyard. Several elements of art and principles of design were used during the creation of this piece. For example, line played a big role in form with the shading on the side of the lighthouse and the rounded carving on the rolling hills below. Line was also used to create movement in the clouds and implied texture on the land. The composition of the lighthouse was created using the rules of thirds with the lighthouse located on the left third coordinates. Space was created with the light house enlarged giving the appearance that It's within short walking distance and the clouds are further out over the ocean. Also, the choice of black printing ink creates a contrast with the white paper and adds a mood to the overall affect.

Artwork No. 4

A collage made with watercolor painted sheets. The focus for this piece was shape and color. I created dimension by layering torn shapes and alternating cool and warm layers. There's a sense of pattern with the repetition of the curvature of each layer like waves of the ocean. To design a balanced composition, I added trees to the right side of the artwork to counter the heavy presence of layers and darker colors on the left. Also, I used the rule of thirds when deciding placement for the taller trees.

Forms at play was the idea intended for this artwork. It explores form by using value through shading and the cross-hatching technique. The colors used are a juxtaposition of warm and cool colors. I also used the rule of thirds to offer a visually balanced composition.

Roses and jewelry were the Inspiration for this piece. It screams form and movement. The rippling layers were painted with value in mind by using tints and shades of green to create Form that is evident in the folds of the petals. The lines feel like a pathway through a maze of ever-giving layers. The highlight of the pearl is the emphasis and initially attracts the eye. Last but not least, The organic nature of this artwork lends to a compound curve type composition.

Poppies are my spirit flower. Their deep velvety red hues and simplistic structure calls to me. I first fell In love with them while growing up in a floral shop. They also offer a truly artistic experience while painting them. To bring out the red I used a split complimentary color scheme(red, yellow green, and blue green). Form was created through value with the various shades of red from light to dark and also the blues used on the vase. The positioning of the 3 poppies was deliberate in the effort to give a sense of balance to its overall composition. The big flower on the right steadies the two smaller flowers on the left. Lastly, the poppies represent organic shapes with their free-flowing lines that connect to make the crepe like petals.

I was walking up my front walk and noticed a solitary leaf laying so elegantly. It was a bit tattered but I couldn't help notice how the beautiful fall colors contrasted with the concrete. I knew I had to paint it In all it's glory. I painted a texture on the side walk in the background to show a contrast with the dark, smooth leaf In the foreground. Also, the bright pink color was added to the tips for emphasis and bring more Interest to this simplistic artwork. You'll notice the value used on the leaf to add a sense of form. This gives the illusion of the leaf sections radiating away from the veins and down towards the concrete. The composition Is heavier towards the lower left corner but lends the eye to travel up towards the upper right corner.
